Lakes & Spa Towns: Where Savoie Works Outside the Ski Season
Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Évian are the part of this region that does not close in April. If your trip falls outside the ski season — or if not everyone in the group skis — this is where to look first.
These 3 towns carry the year-round demand in Savoie Mont Blanc. They are also where spa stays make the most sense, because the wellness culture is local — thermal bathing in Aix-les-Bains and Évian long predates the ski industry — rather than bolted onto a ski hotel.
Each sits on a different body of water: Lake Annecy, Lac du Bourget, and the French shore of Lake Geneva. That matters more than it sounds, because it decides what you can actually do on the water and how busy the shoreline gets in August.
This is the half of the region that does not close. While the ski resorts shut from roughly May to November, Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Évian run every month of the year — and between them they hold the region's only genuinely year-round economy. If your dates fall outside the ski season, this is not a consolation prize; it is the entire answer.
The three are less interchangeable than a map suggests. Annecy is a town with a lake attached, dense and walkable and busy in August. Aix-les-Bains and Évian are thermal towns first, built around licensed establishments operating under French health regulation, which is why their pools and treatment facilities operate on a different scale from any hotel wellness room.
Altitude explains the practical differences. Évian sits at 372 m on the Lake Geneva shore, Annecy at around 448 m with the lake surface officially fixed at 447.07 m, and Aix-les-Bains between roughly 224 and 524 m across its commune. All three are low enough to stay green through winter and warm enough to swim in from June.
Worth knowing before you book

- Both towns grew around establishments a doctor can prescribe a course of treatment at, which is why their pools and treatment wings are on a civic scale rather than a hotel one. Budget a half-day, not an hour.
- These are the winter answer, not just the summer one
- From November to March the boats stop and many shore restaurants close, but the towns keep working. That makes them the quietest and cheapest window of the year here.
- All three are genuinely car-free
- Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry have town-centre stations with hotels inside a 10-minute walk. In the ski resorts car-free is a plan you build; here it is simply how the town works.
- Distance is a poor guide to travel time
- Évian is 49 km from Geneva but 66 minutes, because the lakeside road is slow. Chamonix is twice the distance and the same time on motorway. Check the route, not the kilometres.
Who this area is wrong for
As a ski base this cluster does not work well, and it is regularly sold as though it does. Annecy to La Clusaz is about 45 minutes each way in good conditions and considerably worse on a February Saturday, which costs roughly 90 minutes of every skiing day. For a mixed trip it is excellent; for a ski week it is a daily tax.
August in Annecy is also a genuine problem rather than a mild one. The old town and the shore path are saturated, parking is difficult and prices reflect it. If you want the lake in high summer, base yourself ten minutes along the shore and travel in — same water, different week.
