All 15 destinations, by area

Grouped by ski area, because resorts that share a lift pass are one decision. Pick the area first, then the base.

Getting there, realistically

Almost everyone flies into Geneva. What surprises first-time visitors is the transfer — the airport is in Switzerland and the resorts are a mountain drive away.

Geneva (GVA) — the default

Closest to Chamonix and Annecy at around an hour. The big Tarentaise resorts are a further two to three hours by road.

Budget for the transfer, not just the flight

A Saturday changeover in February can add hours. Arriving midweek, or staying near a rail station, avoids most of it.

You may not need a car

Les Arcs is reachable by train plus funicular. Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry have stations in town. Chamonix's ski areas are not linked, so you will use transport daily there.

When to come, and where

Half of this region closes for half the year. Planning around that is the single biggest saving available.

December – February

Peak ski season. Prices peak with it, and the best rooms go months ahead.

March – April

Longer days and softer prices. High resorts hold conditions; low villages get patchy.

May – September

Ski resorts largely shut. The lake and spa towns carry the season — and are excellent.

October – November

The quietest and cheapest window. Lifts closed, thermal towns open.

How it compares to skiing at home

Two differences catch North American visitors out, and both are worth planning around.

The linked areas are enormous

Les 3 Vallées connects several resorts on one lift pass. You can ski to a different village for lunch — the question is which one you sleep in.

Villages, not base areas

Most bases here are actual towns with their own restaurants and shops, not a purpose-built plaza. Some are genuinely old; some were built in the 1960s and look it.

Half board is common

Many hotels include dinner. It can be excellent value or a constraint depending on whether you want to eat out — check before booking.

The linked ski areas

Resorts that share a lift pass are one decision, not several.

Common questions

Which resort should I pick for a first trip to the French Alps?

La Plagne and Les Arcs are the most forgiving — wide terrain and logistics designed around families. Méribel sits in the middle of Les 3 Vallées, which makes it the easiest base for a group that wants different terrain on different days.

Do I need a car?

Often not. Les Arcs is reachable by train and funicular, and Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry have central stations. Chamonix is the exception: its ski areas are separate, so you will use a bus or a car daily there.

When is it cheapest?

January and March, avoiding the French school holiday weeks in February. For a summer trip, May and September give you the lakes without the July–August crowds.

Is it worth visiting outside the ski season?

Yes, but change your base. The ski resorts largely close, while Annecy, Aix-les-Bains and Évian run all year — and Pralognan is arguably better in summer for hiking than it is in winter for skiing.

How this guide works

Every page is built from a fact sheet before a word of prose is written.

Measured, not described

Walking times to lifts are mapped routes in minutes — never 'close to the slopes'.

Included, or charged?

Spa access, parking and half board are confirmed against the hotel's own site, not a booking listing.

Dated, and honest about gaps

Every page carries a last-verified date. Unconfirmed facts show as 'Not yet verified' rather than a guess.
